Misplaced Loves, Part 6: Glittering Vices

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Jesus,

Jesus often talks about our loves. What we love most, what we long for most, has the opportunity to form us or to deform us. Often times it’s not our will that’s the problem, it’s our loves. James K.A. Smith says, ““Jesus’s command to follow him is a command to align our loves and longings with his—to want what God wants, to desire what God desires, to hunger and thirst after God and crave a world where he is all in all—a vision encapsulated by the shorthand “the kingdom of God.” As we work our way through this season of lent, we are going to explore the depths of those familiar seven deadly sins, but through the lens of love. What are the seven deadly sins and how do they reveal to us misplaced loves in our lives? How do these misplaced loves deform us and lead us to dehumanize one another? And what does the Gospel teach us about the love of God in Christ that reforms, rehumanizes and brings us life?
